Rooted in the Wachau
The Piewald winery has been run as a family business for generations. Since 2005, Helmut Piewald has devoted himself entirely to the winery, and today his son Matthias helps shape the business. Shared values, experience, and a close connection to the Wachau region guide the daily work.

Connected with the Wachau
The Wachau is the home of the wines and the family’s livelihood. In the quiet village of Spitz an der Donau, they cultivate terraced vineyards such as Zornberg, Kalkofen, and Biern—primarily Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, shaped by the distinctive terroir.

Together in the Vineyard
From working in the vineyard to the harvest, the family carefully oversees every step. Everyone pitches in during the harvest. The grapes are given time: they are only picked when acidity and sugar are in balance.

Tradition and new ideas
Helmut brings decades of experience and deeply rooted knowledge in winemaking, which he has gathered since childhood. Today, he is passing on his passion and expertise to Matthias, who is taking the winery into the future with fresh ideas and innovative approaches.

The Piewald Family

Three generations, one shared passion: The farm in Spitz has been owned by the Piewald family for generations. Even during the interwar period, wines were made here alongside livestock farming and forestry, and the Piewalds' wine tavern was extremely popular.

In 1966, Helmut's parents took over the farm. Since 2001, Helmut and his wife Elfriede have focused the winery entirely on bottle-ready wine production, using the same vineyards that had been cultivated by the generations before him.

Today, this experience meets the new ideas of their son Matthias. The family carefully oversees every step, from the vineyard to the bottle. This is how authentic wines with character and provenance are created.
