Man does not live by grapes alone: this slightly changed quotation can be perfectly applied on Wachau winemakers. Veltliner & Co occupy most of the area but there are very few winemakers who do not have a little apricot garden behind their house. Apricots are indeed of utmost importance for the region in general and the Spitzer Graben in particular. The first flow of tourists is due to their flowering – thousands appear when the Wachau is dipped into a deep white and for some time they outstrip the vines and its terraces. I also own some trees from which I distil an apricot spirit. Its production means as much to me as the vinification of wine which is the reason why the apricot harvest outlines a second highlight of the year.
